Short answer
PowerPoint files almost always get big because of images: 4,000-pixel phone photos shown at postage-stamp size, or photos saved as PNG. This tool resizes every image to the size it is displayed at (150 ppi on "Balanced"), stores photos from PNG files as JPEG, and removes images no slide uses anymore. Slides, text, animations and notes stay as they are. A 87-slide deck went from 25.7 MB to 9.6 MB this way.

What the three levels mean

What changes and what doesn't

How to do it in PowerPoint itself
Compress Pictures
Select a picture, then Picture Format tab, Adjust group, Compress Pictures. Clear "Apply only to this picture" so it covers every picture, then pick a resolution. The default in Microsoft 365 is 220 ppi. According to Microsoft this is only in the desktop apps, not in PowerPoint for the web.
Discard editing data
File, Options, Advanced, and under "Image Size and Quality" check "Discard editing data". Earlier picture edits can no longer be undone after that.
Compress media
File, Info, Multimedia section, Compress Media, then Full HD, HD or Standard. According to Microsoft only in PowerPoint for Windows, not on Mac or the web. This tool leaves video untouched.
Why nothing is uploaded
The tool runs as a program in your browser. The presentation is opened there, compressed and handed back to you as a download. It is not sent to Slaide or any other server.
The first time you compress, the browser loads the tool's own code once, not your file. You can check this yourself in the developer tools under Network.
Frequently asked questions about compressing PowerPoint files
Is the tool free?
Yes. No account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you compress.
Is my presentation uploaded?
No. The file is opened and compressed in your browser and never leaves your device, which is why the tool also works for confidential presentations.
Does image quality suffer?
Images are only reduced to the size they are displayed at on the slide. On "Balanced", an image that fills the whole slide ends up about 2,000 pixels wide, more than a Full HD projector displays. For print, use "High" at 220 ppi.
Why did my file barely get smaller?
Then the megabytes are not in images: video, audio and embedded fonts stay unchanged, and images that are already compressed cannot shrink much further. The result box shows how much of the file is video and fonts.
Does it work with .ppt files?
No, only with today's .pptx format (and .ppsx, .potx). Open an old .ppt file in PowerPoint and save it as .pptx. Password-protected presentations need to be unlocked first.
Can I keep editing the compressed file?
Yes. It is still a normal PowerPoint file with all slides, text and animations. Cropped pictures keep the full image, so you can still change the crop.
How large can the file be?
Up to 400 MB. On a phone, very large files can run out of memory; use a laptop for those.
